Kinnelon is home to Smoke Rise, an upscale gated community located on 2,500 acres, with more than 900 homes that vary in size and style. This gated community was established in 1948 and is considered one of the oldest gated communities in the United States.
Kinnelon was formed from portions of Pequannock Township in 1922 and was named after Francis. Kinney who had previously purchased 5,000 acres of land in the 1880s.

Kinnelon Public Schools
The Kinnelon Public School District serves students from Pre-K through 12th. The school district offers four public schools in total which includes Kiel Elementary School, Pre-K-2nd, Stonybrook Elementary School, 3rd-5th, Pearl R. Miller Middle School, grades 6th-8th and Kinnelon High School, grades 9th-12th. The overall Student-teacher ratio is 11.2:1
Kinnelon Public Transportation
Kinnelon offers great access to Route 23 and I-287. Route 23 south connects with I-287 north towards Mahwah and south towards Montville and eventually Route 80.
Kinnelon does not offer train service to Midtown Town Manhattan, but does offer bus service via NJ Transit to the Port Authority on the 194 line.
