Passaic County History
Passaic County is located in the Northwest section of New Jersey and is one of twenty-one counties that makes up New Jersey. Passaic County borders Bergen, Essex, Morris and Sussex Counties. Passaic County also borders portions of Rockland and Orange County New York.
Passaic County was formed in 1837 from portions of Bergen County and Essex County. There are sixteen municipalities in Passaic County with the City of Paterson being the most populated area. The City of Paterson represent almost 30% of the total population for Passaic County.
West Milford Township is the largest town by area in Passaic County and covers almost eighty square miles and representing about 40% of Passaic County in size.
Passaic County Transportation
Passaic County offers a very vast network of highways making it easy to navigate in and out of town. I-287 travels north and south, I-80 travels east and west. The Garden State Parkway travels north and south as well as Route 23. Route 46 and Route 3 both travel east and west.
Passaic County offers multiple park & ride locations with the largest being located on Route 23 north and south. The Route 23 south location offers both a bus terminal and a train terminal which connects with train lines leading to New York City, Hoboken and Jersey City.

Passaic County is proud to be home to three higher education programs.
Passaic County Community College is based in Paterson with locations in Wayne and Wanaque.
William Paterson University is located in Wayne and centrally located to Passaic County municipalities.
Montclair University is located in Montclair (Essex County) with portions located in Little Falls and Clifton.
Preakness Valley Golf Course
The Preakness Valley Gold Course is located in Wayne with easy access from all points in Passaic County. This is a Passaic County owned golf course that offers a Blue Course and a Red Course. Preakness Valley Golf Course was originally founded in 1892 and became a public course in 1931. Preakness Valley Golf Course has the distinct honor of being one of the first 100 golf courses ever built in the United States.
The Preakness Valley Golf Course is home to the Dey Mansion which was built in 1770. The Dey Mansion served as a headquarters for General George Washington and the Continental Army. The Dey Mansion would eventually be sold to Passaic County in 1930 and later restored in 1934 and is open to the public for tours.
